Here, you will see hints & tips, information on our experiences and a guide that will hopefully help you to understand your horse. We hope to help open the line of communication to achieve the results that you & your horse need to obtain the relationship we all strive for.    Once again, welcome to Trugon Chat where we address common cares and ideas for the horses that we all love and care for! This months topic is mare and foal care! As you can see from the pictures above, we have recently had a new addition to our our family! Since this is the time of year for new foals and all livestock babies alike, let's address some of the common issues in basic care. First of all, we should look at appropriate nutrition. Make sure that you are providing good quality coastal and/or alfalfa hay for your mare. During the nurturing period the mama will need extra feed and hay to take care of herself and her new baby! We double up on our feed (Patriot) from four pounds in the morning and evening to eight pounds at both feedings. And the hay, we simply put out a round bale of World feeder hay as free choice for the mama and baby. Look up the Noble Foundation and learn more about World Feeder Hay. It is a hybrid of coastal. It has the same qualities and nutrients as alfalfa except without the alfalfa cost! We can provide the hay if you are interested. Second of all, make sure that the mama is current on all shots and the baby has been given a 5cc shot of penicillin and the navel has been dipped in rubbing alcohol or the equivalent thereof. If you follow these simple steps and throw some love in there, you are bound to have a thriving mama and foal all summer long!
